What Is Cryogenic Processing?

Cryogenic processing (or cryogenic treatment) was originally developed by NASA and has evolved into a very precise process in which parts are cooled in a computer controlled dry chamber to -315F where they remain for 24 to 48 hours before being slowly warmed back up to room temperature. At the atomic level, this process provides two very important benefits. First, it improves hardness of metals by changing the atomic structure of metal by repositioning the carbon atoms, also known as transforming austenite to martensite. Second, the cooling and warming process causes the internal core structure of metal to break up large grain clusters creating a much finer and more consistent microstructure that improves toughness. These improvements have been proven through hundreds of well documented scientific and real world experiments, many of them available for public viewing at the Cryogenic Society of America website.

Study: Gears, shafts, and assemblies, a study by the Illinois Institute of Technology Research concluded that deep cryogenic processing (-300 Deg. F) of carburized 9310 steel increased the gear fatigue life by 100% and the ability of the gear to handle load by over 10% over the same material processed at only -120 Deg. F.

Study: A study performed by Instrumented Factory For Precision Gears (INFAC) concluded that cryogenic treatment increased surface hardness from 55-62.4 HRC to 62.4-68 HRC which reduces wear and extends gear life. The process also reduced tensile residual stresses, thus increasing the load capacity and fatigue life of gears.

Automotive Brake Rotors

Cryogenic Treatment increases the service life of automotive disc brakes by 300% as has been proven in both racing applications as well as heavy commercial use including taxis, police departments, and fire departments.

Cryogenically Treated brake rotors also dissipate heat faster for less brake fade under aggressive braking and are less prone to warping or cracking.

A scientific study published by Vimlesh C. Ajbani, Prof. A.N. Drag racers have found the cryogenically treating roller lifters can increase their usable life from 5 to 10 runs, to over 100. Winston cup teams have found that cryogenically treated connecting rods show half as much wear compared to untreated rods. Racers have also noticed a 3-5 times increase in bearing life after cryogenic processing. Pistons and piston rings have shown significant reductions in wear after cryogenic treatment and engine blocks are much less prone to warping and cracking.
